The weekend of October 28th marked the occasion of the 2017 SoCal Level’s 3, 4, and 5 East Sectional Championship, the SoCal State Championship qualifier. Entered were 408 athletes representing some 20 teams. All 60 Wildfire gymnasts competing, qualified to State Championships. The event, for Wildfire, will be held in San Diego beginning November 18th. From these qualifiers came 40 top 6 All Around rankings, 22 of them among the top 3, having then 8 of them, finishing as AA Gold Medal winners. Wildfire Teams Level 3, and 5 won their respected Championships while the Level 4’s in turn placed as 1st Runner Up. That puts our 2017 compulsory season competition record at 14 and 2 (Level 5’s at 5 - 0, Level 3’s at 5 - 0, and Level 4’s at 4 - 2).

Wildfire’s 15 competing Level 5’s accounted for 26 top three awards, 12 of them being Gold. Of the 80 Level 5 gymnasts competing in total, two Wildfire gymnasts ranked among the top four of that group of 80. The top scoring Level 5 Wildfire gymnast was 7 - 8 year old East Sectional All Around Champion, Arianna Espinoza (37.950, 1st Vault, 1st Bars and 1st Floor - 9.700). The second was, East Sectional AA Champion and so far undefeated this season, Dayenu Munoz (37.900). Dayenu was a 2016 Level 4 State AA Champion. Also a 2016 Level 4 State All Around Champion, Addie Anderson, now a 2017 Level 5 Sectional AA Champion, accounted for a 37.525, while at the same time, winning Bars and Beam. Good work evolved into individual event victories. Adding to the company of Gold Medal winners would be Thi Nguyen for Bars (9.650) and Floor (9.800), Molly Osborne for Vault (9.550) and Malia Todd for Vault (9.650). Thi ’s Bar score was ranked as the second highest of the Level 5 competition, including all age groups. Thi’s Floor and Malia’s Vault scores were ranked as being the highest.

Sixteen Level 4 Wildfire gymnasts accounted for 22 top three awards, 6 of them being Gold. Of the 144 Level 4 athletes participating, 7 - 8 year old All Around Champion, Emma Le (38.500, 1st Vault - 9.600, 1st Floor - 9.800) was ranked the highest scoring AA gymnast among them all. As well, Emma posted the highest vault score of the Level 4 competition, her Floor finishing as the second. Eleven year old All Around Silver Medalist, Makena Jarrett proved solid in her performance as she assembled basically a 9.500 event average totaling 37.975. Just behind Makena, by less than one tenth, was 11 year old AA Bronze Medal winner, Gillian Burrows (37.900, 1st Vault - 9.500, 2nd Bars - 9.650. Notable Gold Medal successes reflect also, the efforts of 12 + age group’s Kristina Newton for her win on Vault and too, the good work of 11 year old Kaylee Ossman’s 9.700 Floor routine.

There were 185 Level 3 gymnasts competing. The top two athletes leading that Level 3 roster of 185 were, Wildfire’s Katie Bieger, who totaled a winning 9.650 event average for a 38.625, and then followed by All Around Silver Medalist Ava-Malani Franco, who was second to Katie by just .25. She posted a 38.600 and when combined with Katie’s efforts on Vault (1st - 9.700) and Bars (1st - 9.800!!), Ava-Malani, by winning Beam (9.700) and Floor (9.725) completed Wildfire’s 9 year old - (B) group’s victory sweep. And bringing up the top 3 All Around trifecta for the 9 - (B) group, was Bronze Medalist Sophia Alagha (38.125). Regarding sweeps, The 9 year old - (A) group proved ambitious as well by prompting their own All Around sweep beginning with AA Gold Medalist Reagan Hoffmann (38.125, 1st Vault, 1st Floor - 9.700), Silver Medalist Natalia San Jose (38.000) and 3rd place AA finisher, Page Hoffmann (37.950, 1st Bars - 9.675). Fun fact: The Hoffmann twins, together as part of the 9 - (B) group, won 3 of the 4 individual events. Also present were two additional All Around Gold Medal performances, fired up by 10 year old Logan Welsh (38.075, 1st Floor - 9.625, 2nd Bars - 9.625) and Hanna Dang (1st Bars, Beam and Floor). Individual event highlights included those provided by 6 year old AA Silver Medal winner, Maylee Chen (1st Vault - 9.750, 1st Floor), 11 year old 2nd place All Around finisher, Paola Aguilar (1st Bars), Jordan Johnson (1st Vault) and All Around Bronze Medalist, 10 year old Riley Hochman (37.825, 1st Bars - 9.650). Maylee’s Vault score was the highest Vault event posting of the meet, this including all Levels and age groups. Katie Bieger’s Bar result was the second ranked Bar score of the meet including all Levels and age groups.
